1950s Portuguese Majolica Plate in the Palissy Manner with Sea Spider Motif
Description
A majolica plate with Palissy style sea spider from the mid 20th century. This Portuguese majolica was made in the manner of Bernard Palissy, a French Renaissance craftsman who worked at the Court of King Henri II and Queen Catherine de Médicis in the 16th century. Palissy would generate a production of serveware with animals directly molded from dead specimen, thus creating a striking effect of realism. The first half of the 20th century showed a renewed interest for his technique and style, and our plate is a direct witness of this revival. Placed on a green glazed background, a sea spider seems to be examining two shrimp. The beautiful contrast between the complimentary red and green colors makes this 1950s majolica plate an exquisite choice for any décor.
