Portuguese Bernard Palissy Style Majolica Plate with Crab Motif, Circa 1920
Description
A Portuguese Bernard Palissy style majolica plate from the early 20th century with crab motif. This glazed majolica plate is directly inspired by the production of French Renaissance artist Bernard Palissy who worked under the reign of King Henri II and Queen Catherine de Médicis. At the time, Palissy developed an unusual taste for serveware adorned with animals molded from dead specimens. It was a complete success at the French court and his work is nowadays visible in the Louvre museum. Our plate, produced in the early 20th century, places itself in this tradition and depicts a red crab, gingerly reaching out for a white clam. The realism is undeniable and one can feel the crab’s enthusiasm and determination.
