Palissy Style Majolica Plate with Red Sea Spider in High Relief, circa 1950

A Portuguese Bernard Palissy style majolica sea spider decorative plate from the 1950s. This Portuguese majolica plate from the mid-century modern period is a direct tribute to French Renaissance artist Bernard Palissy who famously developed his hyper realistic depiction of animals, such as snakes and crabs to decorate his 'rusticware' under the reign of Catherine de Médicis and Henri II. Much of his work can be seen at the Louvre museum. Back to our Portuguese artist who demonstrated a renewed interest in the 1950s for this style of glazed majolica. Our plate features a sea spider, placed almost at the center of the composition but who seems to be reaching for the white shell in front of her.
