‘Life on the Farm’ 1866 Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting by Theodore Fourmois
Description
This oil on canvas painting by Belgian artist Theodore Fourmois (1814-1871) is titled ‘Life on the Farm’ and dated 1866. Influenced by the Barbizon School, Fourmois showed a predilection for the plein-air landscape genre. Developing his style throughout his career, he strove for a more realistic depiction of the natural. The farm, with its thatched roofs, is quiet, animated only by the young shepherdess leading her small herd along the path. The soft tones are nicely contrasted with the light. Signed and dated T. Fourmois, 1866 lower right, the canvas itself measures 31″ H x 44″ W. This Belgian en plein-air landscape painting is set inside a nicely carved giltwood frame with ribbed motifs.
