'Teaching Baby', Pair of 19th C. Dutch Paintings by Jan Walraven **

This pair of 19th Century oil on board paintings is entitled 'Teaching Baby' and signed by Dutch artist Jan Walraven. Similar to Vermeer, Jan Walraven (1827-1863) died at a young age. He produced exquisite genre scenes with many depictions of children. Set in an idealized peasant home, the scenes depict a mother developing the skills of her youngest child. The painting on the right is set indoors and shows his grandmother watching as he tries to grab the small marionette dangled above him. The companion piece is set outdoors and shows the mother trying to teach him to walk. These tender, idealistic scenes are perfectly composed, with the mother, wearing red, placed in the center. Each painting measures 23.5" W x 30 H. Signed lower right, the paintings are set in hand carved frames.
