This Italian wooden hall bench from the early 19th century features a tall back, adorned in its center with a family crest made of two lions, flanking the central coat of arms, topped with a crown and a hat reminiscent of that worn by the Doge of Venice. This coat of arms, similar to what can be found in sculpted décor in Venice, is echoed in intensity by the painted shell, gently resting on rinceaux, the wavy leaf motifs placed below. The hinged wooden seat lifts to reveal a convenient partitioned storage compartment. Very simple in its shape, yet visually striking with its painted décor, this Italian wooden bench circa 1800 would be a wonderful addition to any entryway, foyer or perhaps mudroom.
